About Hostile Homelands
Hostile Homelands is an independent journalism project documenting the often understated political, military, and ideological relationship between India and Israel, and the broader global implications of that partnership.
Particular attention is paid to the impact of these policies on minority communities, democratic institutions, and international human rights norms.
Hostile Homelands seeks to situate contemporary developments within a longer historical and geopolitical context, offering readers and policymakers a clearer understanding of how bilateral alliances shape domestic politics and regional stability.
The work bridges academic insight and accessible journalism, translating complex political dynamics into rigorous, public-facing analysis.
The project prioritizes independence, transparency, and ethical reporting, and is committed to keeping its work free and accessible to a global readership.
Support from funders enables sustained research, travel, and long-form reporting that would otherwise remain under-examined.
Paid subscriptions go directly toward supporting interns, guest writers, and contributors, and expanding the range of voices we publish.
The Team
Hostile Homelands is led by Azad Essa, a South African journalist and senior reporter with Middle East Eye. Azad is the author of Hostile Homelands: The New Alliance Between India and Israel, and has reported extensively on nationalism, geopolitics, and human rights across the Global South and the United States. He previously worked for Al Jazeera English.
The project collaborates with a network of freelance writers and contributors from around the world, bringing local knowledge, regional expertise, and diverse perspectives to its reporting.
Together, the team produces independent, research-driven journalism grounded in field reporting and critical analysis.
